Carl von Marr was an American-born German painter known for his religious and mythological scenes, genre paintings, and especially portraits—like the ones featured here. He began studying art in Milwaukee under Henry Vianden, then continued his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he later became a professor and eventually director of the Royal Academy in Munich. Much of Marr’s artistic focus centered on the human figure and the nuanced study of light. His dynamic style was shaped by a keen sensitivity to light’s quality and direction, which brought depth and vitality to his compositions.
