Statement
My process is whatever the hell I feel like. If I don’t feel it I don’t do it. I do not premeditate anything. I am free when I am making art, so I do not expect anything either. If it is chaos that I feel then I attack with that chaos, I create as if I was destroying something. If it is ease that I feel then my lines flow like water. It is spontaneous and there are times when I am surprised by what I make, as I am discovering the piece as I bring it into being. I swear it already exists and I am simply bringing it here to the both of us. Whether or not I like what I’ve made is not my business, it is what it is and what will be will be.
Biography
Sam Gross was born in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He would spend his childhood on 14257 Secluded Lane. He could not sit still in class, not even on the medications. He would fail at most everything in school but excel in the arts and creative writing. When asked what he wanted to be when he was young, he would say an artist. He would spend all of detention stapling comic books and drawing on his late homework. He did not care to fit in. It was a waste of time, and the person he knew he was. And art was the only thing that let him be all of who he was. He was raised by a blank page and the insatiable urge to create at all costs. Whether he was creating through periods of crippling depression, social alienation, homelessness, institutionalization, life threatening heartbreak, or the very elements of nature, creation was an act of resistance, creation was a matter of mental physical and spiritual endurance, creation was rebellion, creation was the light at the end of every tunnel. Creation was a choice. And it was in choosing creation, he chose life and he lives to this day.
