Statement

My hope is that everyone can see and enjoy nature’s artistic grace through the movement of wood grain
in each of my pieces. I choose the grain and form the piece to gently enhance each “picture” that the
wood presents. It’s a mostly serendipitous process that often surprises me in end. I let the wood do
the talking. It has the story, I’m just translating. Let Wood Speak.

Biography

Ute Hill has been a creative woodworker for most of her life. Early on, she discovered the joys of
stripping decades of corruption off of old furniture and revealing the beautiful wood beneath. Having
lived in different regions in the U.S.A., she got to experience many different types of local woods and
become inspired by the varied objects they made. She has always been drawn to the simple elegance of
Arts and Crafts design and especially the artistry of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose blend of geometric and
naturalistic elements flowed so seamlessly into a Mid-Century Modern aesthetic that she loves. After
retirement, she began to enhance her woodworking skills through on-line and in-person classes,
YouTube “University,” and, of course, lots of experimentation. Her work is inspired by the forms and
textures of the wood, which lead her to create objects that range from elegant serving ware to modern
chairs and tables. Her designs coordinate with the many different aesthetics that value beautiful wood,
and allow the wood to speak for itself.
