Working in a 19th-century farmhouse near Ponca, Arkansas, Alice Andrews makes paintings inspired by the lush landscape and rural scenes she finds right at her doorstep. Born and raised in south Arkansas, the artist has explained that her roots in the state inform her artistic approach: “It’s just a part of who I am as a person and it also influences my art.”
Andrews often paints the springs, rivers, and streams that dot the landscape of Northwest Arkansas. These two paintings depict Running Creek, a tributary of the Buffalo River just south of Ponca. For Andrews, these subjects serve as a constant inspiration: “I have always had a connection to nature and a need to be surrounded by it,” she has said.
