Light Face Slapping, 2018
18 × 9.845 × 9.845 ″ Leather gloves, lined tea towels, and chain Location:BSH Label Text:
Following her mother’s terminal diagnosis, Buckman ruminated on the lives of the women who raised and inspired her. The artist embraced materials and techniques traditionally associated with gendered femininity, often juxtaposing them with stereotypically masculine objects.
Boxing is characterized by aggression, but the boxing glove itself also serves as an instrument of protection. The tea towels, tied in a neat bow, remind one of the domestic labor performed predominantly by women as well as the care and attention that goes into presenting one’s home and self.
