Vik Muniz
Letter Rack (Arkansas), 2019
Framed: 30.625 × 22.875 × 3 ″ Mixed media Location:BSH Label Text:
Photography is at the core of Vik Muniz’s artistic practice. Some of his best-known works are photographs of recreations of canonical artworks in unconventional materials (e.g. a Mona Lisa diptych in peanut butter and jelly). Muniz challenges the distinction between documentation and art by urging the viewer to consider the nature of photographs in relation to other things in the world. As technologies improve so does the capacity to reproduce, thus narrowing the space between artworks and images of them.
Letter Rack (Arkansas) combines representational photographs with “real” material objects. This collage of Arkansas paraphernalia is nostalgic yet surprising: combining new and old, commercial and natural, personal and cultural. With the quality of a flea market, Letter Rack (Arkansas), captures Muniz’s interest in gaps in knowledge, where there is no logic, and we are forced into new experiences.
