Tucked in a windowsill, Weed #346 likely goes unnoticed by many passers-by. When seen, it causes a moment of confusion and seems out of place. Matelli wants to incite this type of experience: engaging with the object as a weed rather than immediately recognizing it as sculpture. We are quick to determine what belongs and what does not, what plants are considered weeds often only depends on their location.

The work is at once foreboding and humorous. Weeds have the capacity to take over built environments, they climb sides of buildings and relentlessly emerge from cracks in pavement. The modesty of the subject matter also mocks the art world, littering clean white spaces with things we are initially inclined to remove.
