Katherine Strause has been painting all her life. Fascinated by the depictions of women in vintage photographs, she scours vintage stores across Arkansas and the deep South to find images that make her laugh or remind her of the women in her family that came before her. Her studio is at the top of a steep and narrow staircase that leads into the attic of her bungalow in Little Rock. When you reach the top of the stairs, you step into a light-filled space dotted with canvases and ideas in progress. She never stops working. Essential to her process is the utilization of the orange sub layer in all of her recent work. This color becomes the unifying element of her compositions and creates the dynamic, abstracted background of her paintings gives movement and texture to the human forms taken from the vintage photographs.
