Anna Valdez
Desert Roses Handkerchief, 2018
32 × 28.125 × 1.625 ″ Oil on canvas Location:BSH Label Text:
Using objects from her domestic environment, Anna Valdez tells a visual story of the individual and of a collective experience though her artworks. Valdez is interested in the ties between identity, material culture, and environment. Living in California influences much of Valdez’s imagery and her color palette. Both the title and imagery in this work recall the physical environment of California in a fantastic display of rich tones that evoke heat and intensity. The handkerchief seems to be floating just above a floral pattern that might be another textile or wallpaper. The artist considers still life paintings such as this to be a kind of self-portrait, replacing the figure with meaningful objects that she has collected.
