Painted aluminum
In this sculpture, a series of painted aluminum units comes together to make a funky, colorful archway. The colors and shapes recall childhood toys: the sculpture resembles an oversized jump rope, suspended in air. On either side, two standing shapes look like stick-figure drawings of human bodies (maybe the someone and someone in the title). The lines of their bodies continue up, higher and higher, forming an arch for us to move through together.
For Rothschild, sculpture has the unique ability to confront us in our own space (unlike other art forms, like painting or drawing, that hang on a wall). The artist has explained: “the ultimate importance of sculpture at this moment is that the encounter is direct and it’s with the body and the eye united [ . . . ] It’s not about looking or projecting or storytelling. It’s about being present with an object that is equally taking up space.”
