Matt Kleberg
Walk Like An Egyptian (Head to Head), 2021
84 × 84 × 1 ″ Oil stick on canvas Location:BPL Label Text:
Stripes of red, burgundy, orange, seafoam green, and sky-blue rise from the ground, forming two large, rainbow-like arches. However, the arches break the predictable pattern, wobbling and wavering as they curve back down. Matt Kleberg uses oil sticks to “draw” with paint, creating the curvilinear and bold, super-graphic style inspired by 1970s design. Despite the crisp lines, a closer look reveals a textured surface that seems to hum with energy, making the painting feel as if it’s in motion.
Kleberg takes inspiration from the architecture of his neighborhood and the places he visits. This diptych—made up of two connected panels—was influenced by the arched ceilings of the historic 1906 Benton County National Bank on Central Avenue.
