Born and raised in Maine, artist Natasha Bowdoin takes inspiration from the bountiful natural beauty of that environment in her large-scale floral compositions. In Bloom 6, graphic flower shapes stack one atop the other in hues of red, pink, white, and green. Some elements are collaged on top of other forms, creating a relief effect in light and shadow. Bowdoin’s use of heavy outline shows the roots of her practice in smaller-scale paper collage.

Bowdoin describes her process and materials as organic and ever-changing: “I combine methodical labor with spontaneity as I cut and collage paper by hand. An organic material itself, paper provides me with a crucial flexibility; the relative ease with which I can add on or cut away leaves room for serendipity right to the end, allowing the work to expand, contract, and respond to its environment.”
