Self Portrait, 1982

15.375 × 19.375 ″ Framed: 21 × 24.75 ″ Oil on Canvas

Gibson Byrd is seated in a white cloth chair with metal support. He is leaned back with his legs crossed looking straight out at the viewer. He has short brown hair with a small/short grey beard. He is in the center of the composition with his legs placed at the bottom right of the composition and cut off. In the viewer's left corner there is a small side table with an orange top and an object. Both the object and table top are cut off in the composition. Behind Byrd on the left side is a book shelf against a orange wall with various colors of books on the shelves. On the top of the book shelf are stacked books and small objects placed on top. In the background of the right is more books placed on shelves that are attached to a white wall. On the right of the composition there is a small red cylindrical trashcan. Behind Byrd directly is an opening doorway in the wall that is painted with darker color for shadows. This piece is framed in a wooden frame with a middle boarder of canvas. The wooden frame has a whitewashed look to it with small black paint splattered in areas.
