30 Knot Morning, 2023
19.5 × 39.5 ″ Framed: 25.5 × 45.25 × 1.25 ″ Oil on boardArtist's statement:
While Lake Superior is abundant in its natural splendor, it will, on occasion, impress upon you its unbridled power. I had been camping and painting on Madeline island for a few days with extremely fair weather when one morning, a front started to move in with heavy winds coming out of the north. Painting that morning was out of the question, which meant that I was free to enjoy the drama of the crashing waves.
In "30 Knot Morning," I wanted to feature the choppy water, the foamy crashing waves, and the iconic Madeline Island shoreline. The water offered some wonderful color harmonies--blues and greens that played well with warmer sunrise colors. The warm/cool color dynamic is echoed in the rocks. The weather-worn, discolored character of the rock was achieved by layering thicker opaque paint over thin, transparent washes and by building up a gritty, rock texture with various brushes and palette knives.
