My paintings piece together cultural cues to challenge dominant narratives about place. Outstation explores how wrangler mythology biases who belongs to the land, combining Queensland rainforest with the dusty plains and mountainscapes associated with cattle stations. How does the ‘wild west’ connect to Australia’s postcolonial legacy? How does this shift, when agency belongs to an artist of colour, a migrant of ‘eastern’ descent? Incongruities act as portals, with parts even upside down, opening space to re-imagine the societal structures that we take as given.
