Appearing to float on their raw linen surface, the veils of transparent colour that comprise Sunshine In fade in and out of view. At times they are barely perceptible, heightening our awareness of the act of looking. A space is created in this painting that beckons the viewer to lean in closer, and in this way, the work celebrates activity in a medium traditionally known to be flat and still. Purcell invites questions about the the way that we see, and about our fragile understanding of certainty and truth.
