Robyn Horn has been intricately crafting wood sculptures in Arkansas for over four decades. Based in Little Rock, she creates heavily textured sculptures that express the illusion of uncharacteristic geometric imbalance juxtaposed against the unbending strength of wood. Here, the various registers of the sculpture create a perceived movement and passing of time while ultimately remaining static.
Horn works in a subtractive process of carving away wood with a studio of power tools, rather than an additive process like that of ceramics, which requires a sophisticated level of precision and patience to create her signature indelible marks. Horn examines each piece of wood and often carves out her sculpture to highlight the natural striations, patterns, and shapes within the wood, while creating the illusion that the sections of wood within her sculptures are fused together, rather than withdrawn from the same piece of material. She regularly utilizes fallen redwood from California, in addition to exotic woods and burls.
