My recent paintings gain definition through the collective tensions between pictorial elements. Shapes are thrust and counter-thrust across the surface, ultimately restricted by the edges of the rectilinear support. The edges of the canvas not only serve as a physical boundary, they become a measure of basic truth. Pictorial elements coalesce within this integral object, the pictorial equivalent of a metaphysical proposition about context and place or what can be defined as country or landscape.
