A photographic portrait of my daughter seated against Paul Cézanne’s Landscape near Paris, c. 1876 (https://www.nga.gov/https:/media.nga.gov/iiif/b41b3b70-
af77-439b-a980-4e1434070111/full/full/0/default.jpg) as her background. She wears a black and gold jacket adorned with Blackamoor brooches, heirlooms inherited from my grandparents and father, alongside other found objects. Her hair is styled in two long plaits, each wrapped at the ends with golden thread.
I hand-stitched around 1,000 glass beads directly onto the photograph to the front opening trim and the neckline of her garment, with golden thread embellishments stitched
into her hair.
She holds a once-racialized doll that I have restored. His original garments have been replaced with a black and gold suit sewn by my mother, Pearl, complementing the girl’s attire. His face has been repainted, removing the exaggerated features historically used to caricature Black identity.
