The Desolate Wind, 2025

"The Desolate Wind" is an eerie and dreamlike painting. A strange girl with a broken umbrella, inkcap toadstools, and bottlebrush seedpods dwell within a semi-abstract landscape of the bleak treeline near my home in Blackheath on the lands of the Gundungurra and Dharug people. I use ambiguous space and a disjointed narrative to create a sense of the uncanny, evoking Freud’s concept ‘das unheimliche’, where the familiar becomes unsettling. Through the lens of a DarkCottagecore aesthetic, the work highlights how the gothic view of the Australian landscape and nature escapism have become popular in contemporary visual culture.
