In 2024, I spent three weeks painting and drawing in and around Broken Hill, NSW. I worked mostly in watercolour and ink, and did a lot of sketching from the top of the Line of Lode. From up there, I had a clear view across the town and down into the streets.
One spot that stood out to me was the big fig tree on the corner of Argent and Sulphide Streets. It provides a lot of shade for people crossing the road, right across from the Palace Hotel. Back in Sydney, I used my sketches from the trip to develop a series of paintings, including this one — The Palace and the Shade Tree.
