Having spent most of my practice on beaches painting scenes void of people I had come to a point where I needed a change of direction. I would often have a coffee at 5.45 am with some friends before painting en plein air at Merewether Beach.

Here people would come and gather from all walks of life before work. They gathered there to watch the sunrise over the landscape with or without a coffee. Walkers, runners, dog walkers, surfers all moving through this area full of sitters and coffee drinkers socialising and watching the sunrise from behind the ocean. It was a ritual.
