Mulga wood enabled durable tools for the First Nations. Baakindji Traditional Owners generously gave me permission to use this root and ochre, salvaged from drought and roadworks.

The “Mulga Line” was the first modern telecommunications out West, a wire running along the Mulga fence posts between sheep stations. Mulga fuelled everything then. Now it’s solar. I hammer high voltage power wire on a blacksmith’s anvil, shaping and reshaping, fixated on the gnarly woodgrain, sign of slow growth in arid sands.
