A scene from the Upper Birrarung region of the Yarra Valley, a landscape I know well, having grown up here. I spent many weekends hiking and camping here, and although I now live in Melbourne’s inner north, my series of Great Forest paintings brings me back often.

I wanted to capture the cool temperate atmosphere, where the air remains thick with moisture even on the hottest summer days. Lyrebirds and bowerbirds are encountered on most visits, with possums emerging in the evenings. I’ve chosen to depict Australia’s largest owl, the powerful owl, an essential part of this Great Forest.
