The Country around Ngukurr is pastoral land, shaped by dramatic seasonal change as the dry gives way to the wet. Cattle move across the landscape, while cowboys and cowgirls work in demanding conditions. Historically, Indigenous musterers worked as highly skilled trackers and riders, camping under the stars, finding water and bringing cattle back to the station. In this work, Daniels depicts cattle being herded towards a waterhole. The colours of the landscape shimmer between memory and observation, recalling seasonal flowers alongside the intense sun and red earth of the Northern Territory. The billabong here brims with life, providing respite for the cattle, while also quietly recalling the pastoral and colonial histories that have shaped this Country.
