Landscape, c. 1928

31 × 35.5 ″ Framed: 39 × 43 × 3 ″ Oil on Canvas

Tunis Ponsen was born in the Netherlands in 1891. By 1914 he had settled in Southwestern Michigan and a decade later he entered The School of the Art Institute of Chicago studying under Karl Buehr and Leon Kroll. Though he is known for representational landscapes and urban scenes in the Midwest, this scene depicts the architectural style of the Dutch buildings of his youth. It may have been completed in the summer of 1928 while he traveled in Europe and painted scenes in Paris and the Netherlands and returned with 40 canvases.
