I have been creating Self Portraits for a very long period of time now. At the beginning, I was approaching my "Self" though the traditional mediums of drawing and painting, as all young art students do. However, there was something very fascinating about photography from the moment I purchased my first camera at the age of 16. I realized I was able to clone myself in 2D in a certain sense and use this self as a means of expressions.
In this collection of self portraits I really see the passing of time.
Being an unrooted person with so many languages, places and memories all comprised in this one body and mind of mine, these self portraits serve me as prosthetics towards a deeper and different understanding of what iss going on inside outside of me.
As unrootedness in my opinion has very close ties with death -- leaving people, places and objects behind with each and every departure -- it was just natural that it played an important role in my life from early on.
I use myself to document these transitional phases and the changes in my relationship with death, as well as how the changing surroundings impact me. Some of the self portraits are truly about my Self, whereas others are a commentary on before mentioned aspects.
The way I approach the image making on this topic is by following my intuition and an impulse that is coming slowly surfacing in my mind and finally taking a shape.
