Working across disciplines and using chance as a collaborator, Alyson Shotz straddles the worlds of innovation and traditional craft. In her Falling Fold series, the artist uses a digital and handmade process to create these sculptural drawings created from metal pins and white thread. A former student of physics, Shotz explores themes of light, gravity, perceptions of space, and patterns found in nature. The templates for her thread drawings are created through three-dimensional computer animation. By extracting a digital still image and weaving it out of thread, Shotz utilizes technology but also returns to a slow tactile process that brings the drawings into real space. The threads pull at the edges of the draping central fabric, almost as if unraveling it, yet simultaneously suspending its movement in space and time.
