Spotted on the drive between Strahan and Hobart during an artist residency, this oast house near New Norfolk demanded a closer look. Once a drying kiln for the hops that defined the Derwent Valley's colonial industry, the building now seems to be slowly surrendering back to the land that built it.
What compelled me most was the contradiction in the landscape: native gums pressing in on one side, introduced poplars planted by hop growers standing sentinel on the other. The layered history is written in its native and introduced species, its paddocks, and the boulders emerging from the hillside.
