Waiting for the Rain

The dry, the drought, the heat.

My grandmother, grandfather, mothers and uncles wait in thirst for the rain. To quench their thirst. To cool and wash their bodies.

They called to their ancestors for the rain.

Their burnt country. Dry country. Dying country. Calling out for the rain. Bush plants hang their leaves towards the ground. Seeds lie dry in the dirt, tossed in dust by the wind.

They too are waiting for the rain.

The animals, hidden beneath weeping trees, are waiting.

First rain and my country celebrates. We all celebrate the rain. Time for new growth.
